Storm wreaks havoc causing widespread power outages

Public urged to exercise extreme caution as inclement weather conditions persist

With inclement weather conditions expected to persist today (Friday), motorists are warned to exercise caution on the wet roads, particularly with standing water on some roads, including the John Ross highway and parts of the N2.

Earlier this morning, the fast lane was closed on the southbound carriageway of the N2 about 1km after the eSikhaleni off-ramp owing to standing water.

The SA Weather Service (SAWS) on Thursday issued a yellow level 2 warning for disruptive rain that may cause localised flooding in parts of KZN.

This after severe thunderstorms battered parts of the province on Wednesday, leaving a trail of destruction and causing power outages in various communities, including Nkandla, eShowe and Mtubatuba.

“The severe thunderstorms that swept through the province on Wednesday night have caused more widespread power outages with heavy rain, high winds and hail, damaging Eskom’s supply infrastructure,” said Eskom KZN spokesperson Joyce Zingoni.

“Eskom technicians continue to work around the clock, assessing the damage and intensifying efforts to safely restore power as soon as possible.”

The public has been warned to avoid fallen cables, damaged infrastructure, or any hazardous situations, and to report them to local authorities.
