Pongola residents demand electricity restoration

N2 brought to standstill near Pongola as residents demand Eskom restore their electricity

Ward 9 residents under Pongola Municipality blocked the N2 freeway about 8km from Pongola towards Piet Retief early this morning (Thursday).

Protesters demand the restoration of electricity in their area. “We do not have electricity and we do not know why,” said one protester.

Learners and teachers could not attend school due to the protest-related road closure, and the N2 was brought to a complete standstill, affecting commuters and long-distance travellers.

At 8.40am, word went out that the SAPS Public Order Policing (POP) unit was en route to disperse protesters, and Eskom management had been contacted.

By 10am the road was still closed with the protest still active, and motorists forced to use gravel roads as alternative routes to reach their destination.
