‘Stop blocking the road!’ – Pongola mayor
Protesting Pongola residents warned against blocking the N2, urged to take their plight to Eskom

Pongola Mayor Bheki Thwala has urged community members to stop illegal protests and rather forward their grievances to the correct department.
This morning (Thursday), scores of residents of the Emandanyini area blockaded the N2 demanding the restoration of electricity.
Children and teachers could not go to school, and scores of motorists and commuters, including heavy-duty and abnormal load vehicles, could not reach their destinations as they were forced to park up and wait.
Others used rural gravel routes as an alternative.
“The issue is between residents and Eskom. Residents were demanding the restoration of electricity after their transformer blew up,” said Thwala.
“Eskom accused its customers of stealing electricity and ordered them to pay a certain amount so the damaged transformer could be replaced. The protest resulted in loss of life.”
Thwala added that he and five members of the community will meet with Eskom later today to find a solution.
