Case of ‘mob justice’ ward cllr moved to regional court

Ward councillor to appear in Mtubatuba Regional Court later this month

The case of a Mtubatuba ward councillor, accused of kidnapping an alleged suspect who was later killed by an angry mob, has been referred to Mtubatuba Regional Court for 25 March.

Cllr Mkhawuleni Zulu briefly appeared in the Mtubatuba District Court on Wednesday before the matter was adjourned.

He is out on bail following his arrest in connection with the death of a mob justice victim in Mtubatuba Municipality last November.

It is alleged that Zulu tied up the victim, believed to be a house robbery suspect, put him in his vehicle and drove off.

The victim was then reportedly grievously assaulted by a mob before being admitted to Ngwelezana Hospital where he died as a result of his injuries.

Retired police spokesperson, Captain Justice Hlabisa said a case of murder was opened at Empangeni SAPS and later transferred to Mtubatuba.

Hlabisa said it is alleged that, during the assault, certain items such as cellphones and other suspected stolen goods were confiscated from the victim.
