Level 4 weather warning for KZN

Brace for severe thunderstorms across KZN tomorrow until Friday

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a level four weather warning for severe thunderstorms across KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday and Friday.

In a statement, the weather desk cautioned that heavy downpours could lead to flooding, excessive lightning, hail and damaging winds expected over most areas in KZN, particularly in the north-eastern region from 3pm tomorrow (Thursday) until midnight on Friday.

“A cold front is anticipated to pass through the eastern parts from [Thursday], accompanied by a ridging high, resulting in scattered thunderstorms over most of the province,” said the weather service.

These conditions may affect the flooding of settlements, potentially leading to the displacement of affected communities.

The weather desk further warned of potential danger to life due to fast-flowing streams, mudslides, rockfalls and soil erosion.

Affected areas in the Zululand region include Ulundi, the City of uMhlathuze, uMlalazi, Mthonjaneni and Nkandla municipalities.
