Richards Bay Minerals calls for KZN government intervention

Aggrieved community members insist RBM's Zulti South should not commence its planned project without the installation of their chief

Following a memorandum of demand submitted by the KwaMbonambi community last Thursday, Richards Bay Minerals (RBM) has requested intervention from the KZN government to safeguard its operations.

The aggrieved community asserts that since 2017, over R93-million in taxes and royalties intended for the community trust are unaccounted for, as no ‘rightful’ chief has been installed to authorise the disbursement of these funds.

They also insisted RBM’s Zulti South should not commence its planned project without the installation of their chief.

RBM spokesperson Nelisiwe Masina confirmed the company is aware of the concerns raised in the memorandum.

She noted that these concerns predominantly relate to chieftaincy and governance issues surrounding community benefits.

“These matters fall outside of RBM’s influence and have been referred to the KZN government,” she remarked.
