2025 Budget breakdown: VAT, grant increases unpacked

Finance Minister warns both rich and poor will face the brunt of the VAT increase

Despite dodging a 2% VAT increase, the phased approach of a 1% increase over two years will still hurt consumers.

While government is set to hike VAT by 0.5% this financial year and by another half percentage point in the following year – effectively bringing VAT to 16% – economists warn this will have far-reaching consequences for taxpayers.
