Empangeni residents ‘seal’ the deal in Robben Island swim

A scary but unforgettable experience for two Empangeni residents who swam with a colony of seals during the Robben Island crossing

Two Empangeni residents ticked off a major item on their bucket list when they swam the Robben Island crossing last week.

Desiree Verwey and Wilana Oosthuizen, both 40, swam the 7.4km Island Escape from Robben Island to Bloubergstrand in 2 hours and 53 minutes.

After a boat ride to Robben Island from Oceana Boat Club, greeted by the sunrise and dolphins, they started their swim through kelp and jellyfish, before they were blessed with calm waters.

An hour and a half into their swim, they were warned of a colony of seals that was about to swim across their path.

“It was our fastest stretch. The seals were with us for about 40 minutes…” said Verwey.
