NSRI cautions spring tide safety
The National Sea Rescue Institute urges water safety over school holidays
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) urges holidaymakers to be safe near water as the school holidays begin for many schoolchildren – especially with the upcoming new moon spring tide peaking this weekend, 29 and 30 March.
“This natural phenomenon occurs twice a month when the sun, moon and earth align, amplifying the gravitational pull on the earth’s oceans,” said the NSRI.
It results in higher high tides, lower low tides, increased tidal range, with hazards of stronger tidal currents.
The effects will last several days before and after this Saturday, 29 March.
Swimmers, hikers and shoreline anglers must exercise extra caution.
“By adhering to these safety measures, you will minimise risks and responsibly enjoy the ocean’s natural beauty,” said the NSRI.
NSRI recommends the following precautions:
• Swim at lifeguard-protected beaches and between the lifeguard flags at all times
• Be aware of rip currents, especially during late afternoon
• Monitor weather forecasts and consult tide timetables
• Avoid hiking trails that may be cut off at high tide
• Shoreline anglers should maintain a safe distance from the water, wear life jackets and carry flotation equipment like a red torpedo buoy
• Boaters and paddlers must wear life jackets, carry safety equipment and use the NSRI SafeTRX app
• Avoid alcohol while swimming or boating
• Always supervise children – drowning is silent
• Be extra cautious during tide changes in the early and late afternoon, and follow safety alerts and warnings issued by authorities
• In an emergency, call the NSRI on 087 0949774 or dial 112.
