Following pressure from his party, EFF PR councillor and Nongoma Deputy Mayor Sabelo Nkosi has resigned.
Nkosi expressed profound gratitude to the Council of Nongoma for entrusting him with the responsibility to serve.
Although he did not stipulate the reason for his resignation, it is understood it is linked to his November arrest for which he and his co-accused are charged with corruption.
Nkosi, together with Mayor Clifford Ndabandaba and Speaker Babongile Sithole – both ANC members – and a Durban businessman were arrested and released on R5 000 bail each.
The group faces 57 counts of corruption linked to fraudulent tenders amounting to approximately R800 000.
Approached by the ZO, Nkosi said any decision taken by the party is binding, and declined to comment further.
EFF Provincial Secretary Nkululeko Ngubane said the party asked Nkosi to vacate his office owing to the ongoing court case.
“He is still a member of the EFF; the decision was taken based on the clause in our constitution which deals with deployment.
“We are not saying Nkosi is guilty of the accusations against him. As a party, we still believe in innocence until proven guilty by the court.
“We took this decision based on service delivery prioritisation, as on Wednesday they were in court and the matter was adjourned to November. This gave us the impression the matter would not be finalised soon.”
