April brings welcome fuel price cut

Relief at the pumps as fuel prices set to decrease on 2 April, while fuel and RAF levies remain frozen

There is finally some good news for South African motorists, who can look forward to a notable drop in the price of fuel.

The latest price change is expected to take effect on Wednesday, 2 April.

The cost of petrol will be decreasing by between 64 and 78 cents per litre, and diesel will come down by around 90 to 93 cents per litre.

Keeping in mind that these prices are prior to tax changes that come into play on 1 April, this will still bring decent relief to motorists’ wallets.

During the 2025 Budget Speech, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced that for the third consecutive year the General Fuel and Road Accident Fund levies would be frozen.

However, carbon tax would increase by 3 cents per litre, slightly countering April’s fuel price cut.

At the time of publication, fuel prices (per litre) are expected to be as follows from 2 April:
• Petrol 93: R20.60
• Petrol 95: R20.77
• Diesel 500ppm: R18.47
• Diesel 50ppm: R18.52

These price cuts are as a result of relatively lower oil prices due to a rising supply coupled with a lower demand.

In fact, the decrease was expected to be even steeper, but when US President Donald Trump threatened imposing tariffs on Venezuelan oil importers, the price of oil increased which in turn lessened the fuel price decrease.

Local economists have, however, predicted further substantial fuel price decreases in the next few months, as well as the potential for interest rate cuts from the South African Reserve Bank.
