Please stay safe on the roads this Easter
With traffic expected to increase over the Easter long weekend, drivers are urged to ensure a safer drive for themselves and those around them
As Zululanders prepare to hit the road this upcoming Easter weekend, here are some important tips to prepare your vehicle for long drives; safe driving, and staying alert to keep the holiday safe and stress-free.
The busy long weekend brings with it increased traffic and road risks, with potentially devastating impacts interrupting what should be a festive, happy time.
According to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), 335 road crash fatalities were recorded in 236 fatal crashes during the 2024 Easter weekend.
Compared with the previous year, this represented a 32.9% increase in deaths and a 14.01% increase in deadly crashes.
While the latest crash prevention and accident protection systems are being integrated into most modern cars, safe driving practices and vehicle preparation are still largely the responsibility of the driver.
Distracted driving is a major problem in South Africa; according to a recent MasterDrive report, 60-80% of car accidents can be attributed to this issue. Unpredictable road conditions are another factor.
When considering this, implementing proactive safety measures is all the more important.
Here are some simple tips for drivers to ensure a safer drive for themselves and those around them:
Vehicle readiness
• Conduct pre-trip vehicle checks before setting off on a long drive
• Check your tyre pressure, tread depth and tyre quality
• Other essentials: Check that your lights are in working order, that your brakes are functioning optimally, and that fluids such as oil and water are topped up
Driver awareness
As the driver, make sure to take rest breaks – aim for a 15-minute break every two hours to help you stay alert on the road
If you feel fatigued, pull over to get some rest or hand the driving over to another capable driver
Do not use your phone, mess with vehicle controls, or engage in distracting activities while driving
Keep to the speed limit, and adjust according to traffic and road conditions
Emergency preparedness
Check that your spare tyre is ready to be used if need be, and keep a stocked puncture repair kit handy
Carry a warning triangle, torch and high-visibility jackets in your vehicle
Keep a first aid kit easily accessible
If your vehicle is kitted out with advanced safety features, get yourself accustomed with them and make use of them. It is recommended to keep these assistance features on at all times, as they may pick up on and react to any danger that you as the driver may not notice.
Prioritising safety and responsible driving leads to a smoother and safer Easter holiday for all. Preparing your vehicle, staying alert, and making use of safety features can help prevent disaster.
