Severe weather on the cards for Zululand region

KZN to brace for heavy downpours, severe thunderstorms from Tuesday, hitting Zululand region on Wednesday

Zululanders are urged to take appropriate safety measures today (Tuesday) and tomorrow as KwaZulu-Natal has been put on alert for severe thunderstorms.

The SA Weather Service (SAWS) this morning issued a level 2 warning, in force from 2pm today until 11pm tomorrow.

Areas in the Zululand region to be affected are Hlabisa, Hluhluwe, Jozini, Mandeni, Maphumulo, Mthonjaneni, Mtubatuba, Nkandla, Nongoma, Ulundi, uMhlabuyalingana, uMhlathuze and uMlalazi.

“Severe thunderstorms are expected over the southern parts of KZN today [Tuesday] and over eastern parts tomorrow, with heavy downpours, severe lightning, hail and damaging winds,” said the weather desk.

“Take caution or avoid travelling on bridges and roads in low-lying areas as these may be susceptible to flooding and there may be sinkholes.

“Avoid outdoor activities as lightning, hail and flooding may result in injuries or death.

“If possible, stay indoors well clear of windows; shelter pets; cover vehicles; move livestock and cars to sheltered areas as there may be flying debris.”

Potential impacts

• Localised damage to infratructure and settlements
• Localised flooding of susceptible roads and bridges
• Wet, slippery roads and poor visibility, with difficult driving conditions on dirt roads
• Localised damage to mud-based houses
