Authorities appeal to drivers ahead of Easter road trips

Call to vehicle owners, public transport operators and churches to exercise extreme caution as thousands prepare to travel for Easter weekend

With heavy traffic congestion expected over the Easter long weekend, motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution on the roads and ensure vehicles are in roadworthy condition.

This is a plea by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) which has called on drivers, religious leaders and public transport operators to lead the road safety campaign.

“Previously, many congregants perished while going or returning from the Easter pilgrimages. It is in this context that religious leaders are called upon to spread road safety messages during these Easter holidays.

“All pastors must deliberately incorporate these messages in their sermons. Road safety is everyone’s responsibility, it cannot be left in the government’s hands alone,” said RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane.

He said public transport operators must also ensure the vehicles transporting churchgoers are roadworthy and not overloaded.

“Organisers of these trips must also plan their trips thoroughly to ensure their drivers rest sufficiently along the way,” said Zwane.

“It is possible to have a crash-free Easter long weekend if all drivers play their part by obeying the rules of the road.”

The warning comes as thousands of Nazareth Baptist Church members from across the country are expected to gather in Richards Bay from Tuesday.

The City of uMhlathuze said traffic congestion is anticipated around the Impuza Temple in Birdswood.

“During this period, the streets of Richards Bay and surrounding areas, particularly Birdswood, will be bustling with worshippers.

“Members of the public are kindly requested to exercise patience and understanding, as the roads may be congested,” said the municipality.

“If you’re planning to travel along Nkoninga Road from eMandlazini to the T-junction of East Central Arterial, please be prepared for increased traffic and potential delays.”
