Madlankala pensioner is in desperate need of a home
Plea to support destitute pensioner in Mandlankala who has been waiting for an RDP house for more than a decade
Persistent rains have further damaged the already dilapidated family home of Nora Mthethwa (77), a resident of Madlankala under the City of uMhlathuze.
Mthethwa – who lives with her unemployed grandson, Philani Sokhulu (33) – says they have waited for more than a decade for an RDP house from the Department of Human Settlement.
According to Sokhulu, politicians have made promises but they vanish when it is time to deliver.
“We survive on my grandmother’s pension. I am still sorting out my business documents so I can assist at home. We are struggling for decent shelter,” said Sokhulu.
Ward Councillor Vincent Dludla acknowledged the family’s dire situation, saying the matter is being dealt with by the relevant municipal structures.
“We had a meeting with [Mthethwa] last week. A temporary structure is being erected for the family, which should be in place for a year while waiting for funds from the provincial government. I have also urged the local businesses to come to the aid of this family,” said Dludla.
