Tip-off leads to seizure of gill nets in Richards Bay

A total of 2.5km of gill nets were recovered in an operation at the Richards Bay harbour

Another small dent was made into gill net poaching activities in the Richards Bay harbour – this time in broad daylight – shortly after noon on Sunday.

Responding to a tip-off, marine honorary officers, members of the Anti Poaching Reaction Unit (APRU) affiliated to DFFE (Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment), assisted by the SAPS Water Wing, moved swiftly to an area close to the coal terminal where they seized a poaching boat laden with ‘walls of death’ gill nets.

A total of 2.5km of nets were recovered and more than 60 live fish were released, while five dead fish were found in the boat.

The poachers managed to evade arrest.

The fight against the indiscriminate plundering of marine species in the harbour continues, and any person who can assist in combatting poaching is asked to call 082 5584275.
