DA marches against Ilembe District Municipality

DA leads march in iLembe District demanding answers and solutions to current water crisis

The DA and community members under the Ilembe District staged a peaceful protest last week, demanding a dignified, sustainable solution to the water crisis they have endured for a long time.

The party submitted a memorandum of demands on Wednesday and gave the district municipality 14 days to respond.

DA Constituency Head in Ilembe, Sakhile Mngadi said many areas under this district municipality have suffered persistent water outages, often going for days or even weeks without reliable access to clean water.

“That is a violation of the most basic human right and a failure of governance at multiple levels. The crisis is exacerbated by outdated, poorly maintained infrastructure and a lack of proper oversight in water delivery.

“Residents are expected to pay for a service that is either irregular or entirely absent,” said Mngadi.

He also said, despite numerous complaints and calls for intervention, there has been little to no communication from the municipality on sustainable plans to resolve this crisis.
“Communities have been left in the dark, both literally and figuratively,” he said.

The DA threatened to take further action if the municipality fails to provide them with proper responses within 14 days.

“Communities will no longer tolerate being ignored. We will monitor this deadline closely and will not hesitate to take the matter further if there is no meaningful response,” he said.

The DA handed over their memorandum to the municipal manager, Sazi Mbhele.
