Road repairs start on R66 in Melmoth

Mthonjaneni Municipality initiates repairs on the pothole-riddled R66 road

Motorists travelling the pothole-riddled R66 in Melmoth will be pleased to learn roadworks are currently under way.

Mthonjaneni Municipality in northern KZN has initiated repairs on the road which has, for years, been described as a ‘death trap’.

Mayor Mbangiseni Biyela said the municipality is using its scarce resources to make the repairs, despite the road falling under the jurisdiction of the KZN Department of Transport and Human Settlements.

“We have made efforts by writing to the [department] twice, but have not received a response. These letters provided a clear list of roads that require repair under the department’s jurisdiction,” said Biyela.

In addition to the R66/R34, Biyela said other roads requiring department intervention include: the P253, the P227 in Magwaza, the D256 in Njomelwane, the D255 in Dubeni, the D395 in Kuthuleni, the D477 in Makhasaneni, and P534 in Nompongwana.

Biyela said this is the second time the municipality is having to intervene as they need to prioritise the safety of road users passing through Melmoth CBD.

“The municipality urges the Department of Transport to devise a plan to repair the roads under its jurisdiction, as their delays are increasing unnecessary accidents,” said Biyela.
