Teenager arrested for fake rape, kidnapping cases

Woman fabricates rape, kidnapping case and is arrested for perjury

Reporting a fabricated case to the police is a serious crime and one 18-year-old girl is in hot water after reporting a fake rape and kidnapping case at Verulum Police Station outside Durban on Friday, 2 May.

KZN Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit detectives arrested the young woman and charged her for perjury and defeating the ends of justice.

Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the woman reported to the police that she was at a party with her friends in Waterloo when one of her friends requested the services of an e-hailing vehicle to transport them home, but the driver took them to Durban instead.

“The woman further claimed she was then forced to hand over a packet with unknown contents to another vehicle and the occupants of that vehicle took her to a club in Claremont where she was assaulted, forced to take drugs and raped by multiple men.

“A case of rape and kidnapping was registered. While police were searching for the suspects, their investigation proved that the supposed victim lied about her rape ordeal.

“She later confessed that she lied because she was afraid of her mother and that she did not want to embarrass herself in the community,” said Netshiunda.

Netshiunda said the woman was arrested and appeared in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court on Monday and was released on bail.

KZN provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, has sent a stern message to people who report false cases, saying police will ensure they face the consequences of their malicious actions.

“As police, we are doing everything we can to end the scourge of gender-based violence and all acts of criminality directed at women and children. We cannot afford to have women reporting imaginary cases for their benefit.

“Many men could have been arrested and detained for lies, and such would incur civil claims against the police. Reporting of fake cases is a waste of police human and physical resources, and anyone who does that will be prosecuted accordingly”, said Mkhwanazi.
