WATCH: Pelican Island to reopen in June

Much fanfare and entertainment is planned for the reopening of the island featuring Survivor SA winner Rob Bentele on 1 June

After months of closure, Pelican Island is set to reopen for recreational use next month.

The once-popular spot was closed in November last year after it had become a dumpsite owing to the unruly behaviour and littering of some visitors.

This led to a decision by the City of uMhlathuze to close off the island to the public.

uMhlathuze Deputy Mayor Christo Botha confirmed this (Friday) morning that, after much consideration and public pleas, the island will reopen under strict conditions.

“I was approached by various community members requesting that Pelican Island be reopened to the public, and we have put together a plan to have it reopened on 1 June (Sunday),” he said.
