Daily patrols by Brackenham Community Police Forum (CPF) have seen drug-related and other criminal activities disrupted in Brackenham area.

The CPF chairperson, Loven Singh, said they are conducting daily patrols in public open spaces, preventing loitering and drinking in public, as well as confiscating bags of dagga.

One area targetted has been along Daisy Leaf Road in the public open space where drug dealers are seen to operate under trees.

“We are taking a zero-tolerance approach to drugs in our community and have been disrupting criminal activities at every opportunity we get.”

He said Daisy Leaf remains an ongoing challenge, explaining, “Not only are people gathering there to sell drugs, but they are also making fires, cooking, littering and dumping.

“Neighbours complain daily about groups of people, and we have seen an increase in theft and burglaries which we want to eradicate permanently.”

He said children and women, in particular, are at risk from loiterers.

“Local security companies have also been a great help to the CPF as they also patrol and deter people from the area, and assist when we respond to incidents.”

Singh said drugs remain a problem in the community, not only through drugs sold, but the associated abusive activities.

“Substance abuse is high and crime is one of the ripple effects of drug addiction with many users stealing from their own homes or committing burglaries or theft,” he said.

“I receive ongoing calls from parents looking for help for their children who have succumbed to addicition.”

Help for addiction

He urged those suffering from substance abuse or gambling to join support groups run by Jump Youth Mission at Brackenham Community Hall on Monday, and Veldenvlei Community Hall on Tuesday, both starting at 7pm.

“The groups are not only for addicts, but also those affected by addiction, or anyone who feels stuck and needs support in recovery,” he concluded.
