Gill netters move upstream

Authorities pounce on gang of gill net poachers who have shifted from the Richards Bay harbour to the Mzingazi Canal

Yet another interception of gill net poachers caught in the act was made on Saturday night – this time well upstream from the harbour area.

Members of North Coast Anti Poaching Unit pounced on a gang of poachers kilometres up the Mzingazi Canal.

Although the poachers managed to evade capture, three ‘walls of death’ nets were recovered and removed.

The total 3.2km length of nets contained 67 dead mullets, along with 17 grunter, a kingfish and a sandfish which were released alive.

The members returned to the area on Sunday and found a camp in the bushes on the banks of the canal, where a boat was confiscated.

Any person who can assist in combatting poaching is asked to call 082 5584275.
