KZN leader promotes strong families on International Day
KZN’s Mbali Shinga celebrates International Day of Families, promoting family well-being and safety in Nongoma
KZN Social Development MEC Mbali Shinga led the celebration of the International Day of Families at Nongoma on Tuesday. During the celebration, Shinga emphasized the province’s commitment to strengthening family units and promoting the well-being of all family members.
This year, the day was celebrated under the theme ‘Family-Oriented Policies for Sustainable Development,’ highlighting the critical role families play in shaping a more sustainable and equitable future.
She brought hope and renewal to Fikile Kunene during a home visit to her home in Bhukhalini, ward 20, Nongoma, and presented the family with a food voucher and winter blankets in commemoration of International Family Day. She later handed over 30 food vouchers to families mired by poverty.
This initiative underscores Shinga’s commitment to tackling poverty, inequality, and the rising cost of living in communities.
The event highlighted the importance of family in shaping society and encouraged collective responsibility in caring for and supporting vulnerable family members.
She also emphasized that families are the cornerstone of society, playing a vital role in raising children, protecting their rights, and providing a safe haven, emotional support, and guidance. She reaffirmed the department’s commitment to strengthening families, emphasizing the importance of family units in building a resilient and caring society.
“As we celebrate the International Day of Families, we call on all sectors of society to work together to build strong families. Let us prioritize the well-being of our families and provide support to vulnerable members, including children, women, people with disabilities, and older persons,” she said.
Shinga said numerous factors contribute to family breakdown, including Gender-Based Violence and Femicide, substance abuse, and the pervasive challenge of high unemployment rates. “As the department, we have intensified our efforts to combat Gender-Based Violence and substance abuse, recognizing the devastating impact these issues have on individuals, families, and communities, as we strive to build strong and united families,” she said.
She further cautioned parents to be vigilant and bridge the digital divide with their children, especially after numerous cases of online luring.
“By being familiar with these platforms, parents can also monitor their children’s online interactions, identifying potential risks and warning signs, such as engagement with harmful individuals or content, and take proactive steps to ensure their safety and well-being,” she said.
