Beat the cold and flu blues this winter

Home remedies often focus on managing symptoms of colds and flus

The winter chill has set in as the cooler season approaches, but there are several ways to reduce the risk of catching the flu.

These include getting the flu shot, practising good hygiene, boosting the immune system, and more.

For common colds and flu, remedies often focus on managing symptoms rather than curing the viral infection itself.

Home remedies like rest, chicken soup, tea, warm lemon water, and aromatherapy may also help ease symptoms, along with staying hydrated.

Over-the-counter medications can help reduce discomfort.

Prevention involves practising good hygiene, avoiding close contact with sick people, and getting enough sleep.

Tips to treat colds and flu

Rest:
Your body needs time to fight off the infection. Aim for 8-10 hours of sleep each night.
Hydration:
Drink plenty of fluids like water, tea, or broth to prevent dehydration and ease congestion.
Symptom relief:
Over-the-counter decongestants, pain relievers, and antihistamines can help manage symptoms.
Saltwater gargle:
Can soothe a sore throat.
Humidifier or warm compress:
Can help loosen mucus and ease congestion.
Honey:
May help with coughs, especially in children over one year old.

Preventing colds and flu:

Good hygiene:

Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing, and avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Avoid contact with sick individuals: stay home when you are sick and avoid close contact with others.

Practice cough etiquette:
Cover your cough or sneeze with your elbow, use a tissue, and discard it properly.

Manage stress:
Stress can weaken your immune system, so find healthy ways to manage stress.

Stay hydrated:
Drink plenty of fluids to keep your body hydrated.

Eat a balanced diet:
Focus on fruits, vegetables, and whole foods to support a healthy immune system.

Consider a flu shot:
Vaccines can help protect you from influenza.

Keep warm:
Dress warmly, especially in cold weather, to avoid exposing yourself to viruses.
