Nongoma residents receive aid as KZN marks International Day of Families

Social Development MEC highlights family unity while providing blankets and food vouchers to vulnerable Nongoma families

In celebration of International Day of Families on Tuesday, some 30 Nongoma residents received welcome donations.

Social Development MEC Mbali Shinga led the celebration, themed Family-orientated Policies for Sustainable Development.

Blankets and food vouchers were distributed to families in need, with Shinga leading home visits.

“As we celebrate International Day of Families, we call on all sectors of society to work together to build strong families. Let us prioritise the well-being of our families and provide support to vulnerable members,” she said, adding that families play a vital role in protecting the rights of children.

Shinga cited gender-based violence (GBV), substance abuse, and unemployment as critical threats to the family unit.

“We have intensified our efforts to combat GBV and substance abuse, recognising the devastating impact these issues have on communities, as we strive to build strong and united families.”

The MEC further cautioned parents to be vigilant to digital threats facing children.

“By being familiar with these platforms, parents can monitor their children’s online interactions, identifying potential risks and warning signs, and take proactive steps to ensure their safety and well-being.”
