Mayor refutes arrest claims as ‘smear campaign’

Mayor labels arrest allegations as 'a malicious smear campaign' to damage his reputation

A story doing the rounds on social media alleges Mandeni Mayor Thabani Mdlalose was arrested and released on R10 000 bail in connection with a court case involving the late councillor, Senzakwenzeke Mabhida.

He refutes the claim, saying, “I wish to state that I have never been arrested, nor have I appeared before any court of law. These rumours are part of a malicious smear campaign intended to damage my reputation and mislead the public.”

Mabhida, a Mandeni Municipality councillor, was shot and killed by two gunmen at his home in February. Reports suggest Mabhida’s killers pretended to be locals seeking his intervention in community matters.

Mdlalose expressed his disappointment at the timing and insensitivity of the allegations, given the ongoing mourning of the Mabhida family.

“It is deeply disheartening that such misinformation is being spread at the expense of a grieving family. The late Mabhida deserves to be honoured with dignity and respect,” said Mdlalose.

While acknowledging the tense political climate ahead of the upcoming 2026 Local Government Elections, Mdlalose called for integrity and responsibility in political discourse.

“I understand that election season often brings heightened tensions and political manoeuvring. However, it is unfortunate that some have chosen to engage in destructive tactics rather than constructive dialogue. Our communities deserve better.”
