Fatal bus, truck collision claims 12 lives

12 die in tragic accident on R34 between Vryheid and Ulundi in early hours of Tuesday morning

Twelve people were killed and 38 injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a truck on the R34 Matatani road between Vryheid and Ulundi in the early hours of this morning (Tuesday).

KwaZulu Private Ambulance paramedics responded to the scene, providing immediate medical attention to the patients.

Ten had sustained critical injuries, 22 were seriously injured, and six sustained minor injuries.

The multi-service emergency response team stabilised the injured before transporting them to nearby medical facilities for further treatment.

Nine people were declared dead at the scene. Despite intensive efforts by paramedics and medical staff, three more died from their injuries in hospital.

The cause of the collision is under investigation and highlights ongoing road safety concerns on one of KZN’s major routes.
