International Yoga Day: Discover the benefits of mindful movement
International Day of Yoga raises awareness of the many benefits of practising yoga.
International Yoga Day is celebrated every year on 21 June, so what better time to stretch, and embrace this mindful way of moving?
Yoga is an ancient Indian practice. The word ‘yoga’ is derived from Sanskrit, which means to join or to unite, symbolising the union of body and consciousness.
International Day of Yoga was established by the UN in 2014 following a proposal by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
It aims to raise awareness of the many benefits of practising yoga.
“Yoga is an invaluable gift from our ancient tradition. Yoga embodies unity of mind and body, thought and action … a holistic approach [that] is valuable to our health and well-being. Yoga is not just about exercise; it is a way to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and nature,” said Modi.
Benefits of yoga:
1. Yoga improves strength, balance and flexibility.
2. It helps with back pain relief.
3. It can ease arthritis symptoms.
4. Yoga benefits heart health.
5. Yoga relaxes you and helps you sleep better.
6. It gives you more energy and enhances moods.
