Merry month for shore anglers as fish take the bait

Angler's angles from the Bay

With the onset of winter and declining water temperatures, the season for targeting edible fish has arrived.

Zululand anglers who have taken the time to fish the Njokkies ledges in the day have been rewarded with southern pompano and Natal stumpnose – the bait of choice being crayfish, pink prawn or squid.

Some big shad up to 60cm have also made an appearance.

Andre Coetser landed a pompano of 94cm (13.95kg) which is possibly a new Zululand record.

Anglers braving the cold evenings have been fortunate to hook and land some beautiful dusky kob.

Dean Reddy, fishing near the Kwambo old ramp using an octopus leg for bait, landed a magnificent specimen of 162cm (40kg), which was safely released.

Anglers taking a trip down south to fish the sardine run can experience the excitement of trying to land a big shark or spinning for garrick and kingfish.

If any keen anglers would like to improve their skills, join one of angling clubs affiliated to the Zululand Shore Angling Association.
