Man arrested in possession of gold-bearing materials after illegal mining crackdown by police

Illegal mining in Pongola remains a problem, with police following tip-off information to raid a disused mine in the town recently.

Police members carried out an intelligence-driven operation, aiming to tackle all illicit mining-related crimes in Pongola.

According to Captain Siyanda Shangase, the operation yielded positive results, with a 47-year-old man arrested for possession of gold-bearing materials and equipment used to process gold.

The suspect made his first court appearance at Pongola Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
