WATCH: NPO encourages responsible, effective giving this Mandela Day

Lungelo Youth Development in Richards Bay creates awareness of giving back appropriately for Madiba Day

In light of Mandela Day, Richards Bay NPO Lungelo Youth Development (LYD) shared their thoughts on responsible charitable donations, urging the public to hold accountable those NPOs they support.

“We are excited for the community of Richards Bay and everybody who wants to give back,” said Mary Mlambo from LYD.

“Let us give to uplift the community – to make sure we leave the communities to thrive. You are planting a seed to want to make a difference.”

However, Mary knows charity is not a quick fix.

“Please give from the heart. When you come and spend time at the NGO, please remember those little children are human beings, they want to be loved – it’s not just about bringing material things, but giving them a hug.”

Mlambo asked that people don’t give old clothes or leftover food, and advised for donors to hold NPOs accountable.

“Even if you donate money, ask what is done with that money. Let us make sure we serve the people of God together.”

She thanked the community for wanting to give back, adding, “We appreciate you, and we look forward to seeing you on Mandela Day.”
