WATCH: Empangeni tanker crash scene cleared

Mop-up operations have been completed following this morning's tanker crash on the R34

A section of the R34 in Empangeni, which was closed for hours following a tanker crash in the early hours of Wednesday morning, has now been reopened.

This is after the completion of mop-up and recovery operations.

The tanker, which was travelling towards the Empangeni CBD, lost its trailer just after the Central Park intersection, separating from the horse.

The tanker then veered off the road, crashed into the barrier wall alongside the road, and fell onto the road, upturned. The driver was fortunate to escape injury.

The accident led to the full closure of Main Road, with traffic officers redirecting motorists to alternate routes.

City of uMhlathuze Fire and Rescue was on standby at the scene, as the tanker was fully laden with diesel.
