KZN traffic officials clamp down on lawlessness

Dozens of motorists find themselves behind bars this weekend for driving under the influence and violating the National Road Act

Several motorists found themselves in handcuffs last night (Friday) and during the early hours of this morning for possession of drugs, drunk driving, and other traffic violations.

This is after the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) was on the ground throughout the streets of KwaZulu-Natal to enforce its no-nonsense, zero tolerance and Alufakwa campaign.

According to reports by the KZN Department of Transport, more than 30 people lost their lives on the province’s roads in the first week of August.

With an evident increase in fatal crashes around paydays, especially on the 15th and 25th, RTI was assisted by SAPS, Metro Police and traffic officers from various municipalities to execute its vision and goal of cleaning up the streets.

KZN MEC of Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma applauded their commitment to ensuring that fewer people die on the roads due to reckless driving and irresponsible driver behaviour.

During the sting operation, drivers were arrested for:
– Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol
– Violating the National Road Traffic Act and the National Land Transport Transition Act
– Possession of illegal drugs or firearms and stolen vehicles
– Outstanding warrants of arrest
