Zululand District police arrested a 42-year-old suspect in KwaNongoma for being in possession of four unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

The arrest was carried out in the early hours of Sunday morning, when police officers from the Zululand District Task Team and the Crime Intelligence acted on a tip-off that a resident of the Gwabe area in KwaNongoma was in possession of unlicensed firearms.

KZN SAPS said, once the information was verified an operation was executed and the police pounced on the suspect at his home.

“The suspect was found inside the house and when the members conducted a search, they found a .303 rifle with a scope attached, an AK47 assault rifle, an Uzzi, as well as a 9mm pistol.

“The firearms were found under the mattress of the bed he was sleeping on. The suspect could not produce a licence for any of the firearms found in his house,” said the provincial police.
