Local cop in hot water for reported political affiliations

Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi instructs district commissioner to withdraw police constable from Ntambanana Police Station

Police officers must appear neutral at all times, with no political party association allowed.

However, one Ntambanana police constable is now under investigation for allegedly doing just that, by wearing political attire and involving himself in political activities.

KZN Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, explained that the South African Police Service Act, “…prohibits a police officer from publicly displaying or expressing support for or associating himself or herself with a political party, hold any post or office in a political party, wear any insignia or identification mark in respect of a political party, or in any other manner further or prejudice party-political interest.”

Mkhwanazi instructed the District Commissioner of King Cetshwayo to immediately withdraw the police constable from Ntambanana Police Station pending an investigation into his alleged political involvement.

Mkhwanazi said he would also contact the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority to investigate allegations that the same constable owns a security company providing VIP protection services, among other security duties.

“No police officer is allowed to be involved in security, alcohol, or taxi industries. Community members are urged to report all police officers who involve themselves in politics and dodgy businesses that compromise the integrity of the South African Police Service,” he said.
