Snake season warning: 1.2m forest cobra caught near Kwambo
Snake experts share safety tips as snake season begins
It’s that time of year when snakes emerge from their winter lethargy and start moving around in search of food.
For residents, that means keeping a wary eye out for serpents that might enter yards, homes and even business premises.
And the summer awakening has begun in no uncertain terms, according to local expert snake catcher, Peter ‘Daring’ Daniel.

“Snakes are really on the move now, especially, for some reason, forest cobras. On Friday I caught my tenth and the season has hardly begun,” said Peter.
“This was a 1.2m forest cobra at Penicuick near Kwambo, not far from where a lot of kids were involved in motocross riding at Teza.”
Snake experts do’s and don’ts:
· It’s best to always leave snakes be, but if that isn’t possible, call for help.
· Be cautious if encountering a snake. Keep a safe distance and, if possible, get a clear photo so a snake expert can identify it.
· Close all windows and doors and put a towel under the door until a snake expert arrives to remove it.
· Do not hit, kill or corner a snake as it will get angry and bite.
· In case of a snake bite, remain calm, take a photo of the snake for ID purposes, and seek medical attention immediately. Receiving the correct antivenom as soon as possible is critical.
· Keep properties clean and avoid storing rubble as it brings lizards and mice – which attract snakes.
· To avoid Spitting cobras, which are common around water, especially at night: clear your living area, wear proper footwear, and watch your step.
