Inquest docket opened after Mtubatuba teen's drowning in dam near St Lucia

Mtubatuba police have opened an inquest docket into the death by drowning of a teenager (17).

According to reports, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) St Lucia Station 40 duty crew were activated shortly after 7am on Monday after receiving reports of a drowning in progress at a dam between Monzi and Mtubatuba.

“NSRI St Lucia rescue swimmers, the rescue vehicle and SAPS responded,” said St Lucia NSRI station commander Melinda Snyman.

“On arrival at the scene, the community pointed out an area [in the dam] where it was believed the teenager was missing.

“NSRI rescue swimmers deployed into the water to free dive search. They located the teenager [whose body] was recovered to the shore in cooperation with police.”

The teen was declared deceased on scene and the body taken into the care of Department of Health Forensic Pathology Services.
