WATCH: Concerns raised over non-functioning traffic lights
Umpteenth accident at busy John Ross highway intersection
The working week literally started with a bang on Monday, with an accident between a luxury car and a truck at the Medway intersection with the John Ross highway.
The truck was turning right at the nursery intersection and the car was travelling from Meerensee towards Arboretum/Alton.
Two occupants of the truck suffered serious but non-critical injuries, while 10 more sustained slight injuries and were treated on scene.
This was the umpteenth accident at that intersection, and locals report scores of near misses every day owing to the fact that the traffic lights are seldom, if ever, working.
Added to the danger is that the highway traffic is generally travelling at high speed and high volume, while the port traffic flow normally comprises slow-moving vehicles.
“The municipality is hardly able to replace the robots before they are knocked down again,” said one spectator at the scene.
“Drive past here every Monday and you will see that some drunk driver has taken the poles out over the weekend.
“To me, the only solution is to erect speed humps at all the approaches to the intersection, or else we as ratepayers will keep on contributing to repairs – not to mention witnessing the accident victims and dodging glass and car parts all over the road.”
