Ulundi ready to go for annual Reed Dance

Friday transport inspection to ensure 3 000 maidens transported safely, securely to weekend Reed Dance ceremony

ULUNDI Municipality has conducted a comprehensive transport inspection to ensure all buses that will be transporting maidens to the annual Reed Dance ceremony are in good condition.

The Reed Dance showpiece is set to take place at the Emashobeni Royal Palace in Pongola this weekend.

Some 3 000 maidens are expected to participate in this historic and sacred cultural activity, which continues to play a pivotal role in the preservation and celebration of Zulu heritage.

On Friday, the municipality commenced its day with a vibrant parade through Ulundi CBD, led by Deputy Mayor Thembelihle Madela, with councillors and municipal manager Sandile Khomo.

Speaking at the event, Madela emphasised the importance of ensuring transport arrangements are safe and efficient.

“As the municipality, we carry the responsibility of safeguarding the lives of our maidens as they journey to uphold this beautiful cultural tradition. This inspection is not just about compliance, but about our duty of care to the youth, who represent the pride and future of our nation,” she said.

Khomo added, “The logistics surrounding Umkhosi woMhlanga require meticulous planning and coordination. Transport is at the heart of this, and today’s inspection demonstrates our readiness and commitment to ensuring the event runs smoothly and safely.”

The municipality has partnered with taxi associations and other transport stakeholders to ensure all vehicles are fit for purpose, drivers are compliant with road safety regulations, and that young maidens are transported with dignity and security.
