Weather warning: Level 2 severe thunderstorms forecast for Zululand region

Stay safe on the roads: Zululanders to expect wet, wild Saturday in parts of region

SEVERE thunderstorms and heavy downpours are expected in parts of the Zululand region tomorrow (Saturday), with the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issuing a level 2 warning from midnight tonight (Friday) until midnight tomorrow.

Affected areas include Hlabisa, KwaDukuza, Mandeni, Maphumulo, Mthonjaneni, Mtubatuba, Nkandla and Ulundi.

“A surface high pressure system ridging behind a cold front is expected to result in isolated to scattered showers and thunder showers over KZN tomorrow,” said the SAWS, adding that the extreme north of the province should not be affected.

Severe thunderstorms and heavy downpours are expected to be accompanied by damaging winds and excessive lightning and hail.

• Localised damage to infrastructure and settlements
• Localised flooding of susceptible roads and bridges
• Wet roads and poor visibility, with difficult driving conditions on dirt roads
• Large amounts of hail over an open area
