Premier, Public Protector strengthen accountability drive in KZN
Corruption, maladministration and service delivery inefficiencies in KZN tackled at high level meeting.
KZN Premier Thami Ntuli this week met with Public Protector, Advocate Kholeka Gcaleka to reinforce cooperation aimed at improving accountability, transparency and service delivery in the province.
Gcaleka was joined by PPSA (Public Protector of South Africa) CEO Thandi Sibanyoni and KZN provincial representative Molly Ngcobo.
The meeting highlighted the importance of collaboration between government and Chapter 9 institutions to tackle corruption, maladministration and service delivery inefficiencies.
Key focus areas include data-sharing, joint monitoring and stronger anti-corruption measures.
“We are fully aware of the serious allegations of corruption, maladministration, and poor accountability that have impacted both provincial and local government over the years.
While many of these matters are linked to previous administrations, we are committed to confronting them decisively,” said Ntuli.
The premier reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building a capable, ethical and responsive government.
Both parties acknowledged progress in implementing remedial actions issued by the Public Protector, and reaffirmed their commitment to an existing memorandum of understanding, which guides cooperation.
They also noted ongoing challenges such as budget constraints, delays in departmental cooperation, and illegal electricity connections, agreeing to pursue proactive solutions.
Ntuli pledged sustained dialogue with the Public Protector to strengthen governance and restore public trust.
