High tea, high impact: Cuppa for Cansa supports local cancer care

Save the date: Cuppa for Cansa high tea, French flair and fundraising for hope.

Share a hot beverage for a good cause at Cuppa for Cansa on 18 October, from 10am to 1pm, at the Umfolozi Hotel Casino Convention Resort’s Jabulani Dome.

Dr Jayeshnee Moodley, a practicing obstetrician and gynecologist with over 12 years’ experience in Zululand, is spearheading the campaign.

“It has been a vision of mine for some time and I’m glad I could bring it to fruition,” said Dr Moodley.

“This is an awareness and fundraising event dedicated not only to cancer patients, but also to the families who care for them. Cancer affects us all, but together, we can make a difference.”

The event will raise funds for the Cansa Association and Zululand Hospice, ensuring funds uplift local patients and families.

The theme is an Exclusive High Tea with a French Twist, and women are encouraged to dress in their catwalk best.

Drive to help others

Dr Moodley’s background in gynaecologic oncology, including having led the Gynae-Oncology unit at Albert Luthuli Hospital, has shown her the heavy burden cancer places on families.

Twelve years ago, she launched a free pap smear drive in Zululand to promote early cervical cancer detection. It has since grown into a life-saving campaign for hundreds of women.

“I have walked alongside countless patients and their families during their most difficult battles. Cancer knows no age, race, or gender. I have known two young women – who were doctors at the peak of their career and motherhood – diagnosed with breast cancer.

“One of these beautiful women has sadly passed, leaving behind her husband and pre-teen daughter. The other is still battling as a warrior. I also have a close mother figure going through cancer with bravery and grace. This is close to home for me!”

She says, while surgery, chemotherapy and radiation are critical, true healing requires much more – dieticians, physiotherapists, psychologists, social workers and palliative care.

“Families, too, need emotional, psychological and financial support. Sadly, these resources are scarce in Zululand, and many struggle to provide the holistic care every cancer patient deserves.

“We all know someone with cancer and we want to ensure their quality of life is filled with love, support and dignity,” said Dr Moodley, urging community and corporate sponsorships.
