Heavy rain for parts of Zululand

Friday flooding possible over northern KZN as weather service issues level 2 alert

Zululanders are urged to take extra care on the roads today (Friday), as a warning for disruptive rain has been issued.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued the level 2 alert on Thursday, which is in place until 5pm this evening.

Areas affected are Hlabisa, Hluhluwe, Jozini, Mtubatuba, uMhlabuyalingana and uMhlathuze.

“Scattered showers and rain can be expected over the north coast of KZN, resulting in disruptive rain that may lead to localised flooding of roads and settlements,” said the weather service.

Potential impacts

• Localised flooding of susceptible settlements, both formal and informal, as well as roads and low-lying bridges

• Major roads affected but can be used with added travel time

• Poor driving conditions on dirt roads

• Vehicle accidents possible owing to reduced visibility and wet roads

Advisories

• Stay indoors and off the roads where possible

• Avoid crossing low-lying rivers or swollen streams

• If trapped in a vehicle, abandon it and climb to higher ground

• Protect livestock or move them to higher ground
