Drunk driver nabbed on the N2
KZN law enforcement lauded as weekend operation nabs drunk drivers in various parts of the province
With multiple deadly crashes on the N2 over the past few weeks, there are ongoing efforts to tackle driver lawlessness across KZN.
More than 90 drunk drivers were arrested in various parts of the province over the weekend, including one who was nabbed on the N2 near Mtubatuba.

The driver was caught speeding and overtaking on a solid white line on Sunday evening.
“He drove into oncoming traffic and almost crashed into the fully alert and vigilant Chief Provincial Inspector Thulani Mthembu,” said KZN Transport and Human Settlement MEC Siboniso Duma.
Duma commended the efforts of law enforcement, especially Inspector Mthembu, who gave chase and stopped the vehicle about 1km away.
“We commend motorists and members of the public who worked with our highly efficient, energetic and dedicated team from Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) to ensure the arrest of this unruly motorist.
“A breathalyser test was conducted, and the motorist was found to be three times over the legal blood alcohol limit [which is less than 0.05g/100ml in South Africa],” said Duma.
The motorist was detained at KwaMsane Police Station. He is expected to appear in court on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol as well as reckless and negligent driving.
Duma lamented the recent death of three members of the Mavimbela family, who lost their lives on the N2 earlier this month.
The tragic accident was followed by four separate crashes on the N2 a week ago that left seven people dead.
“The arrest of 93 drunk motorists over the weekend and an increase in the number of arrests to 293 since August is a clear indication of the efficiency and dedication of RTI,” said the MEC.
“Our zero tolerance, no nonsense Alufakwa Campaign will continue to target suburbs, city centres, townships, and many other areas.
“We want to make sure criminal groups and individuals do not use our road networks to cause public disturbance or to commit crimes anywhere in the province.”
