5 injured as motorists swerve around broken road section in Empangeni

Problem patch causes hazardous situation for motorists in Empangeni

A stretch of road in Empangeni proved hazardous for motorists over the weekend, as drivers took to the oncoming lane to avoid driving over the incomplete section.

The stretch in question is at the corner of Robin Road and Louis Botha Avenue, next to a manhole, where tar was dug up and only flimsy danger tape around the affected area.

At about 7.30pm on Saturday, two vehicles collided after one motorist reportedly tried to avoid the problem patch.

Five people sustained injuries, with one serious but stable.

According to Ward 23 Cllr Andre de Lange, the issue was reported on Thursday last week.

On Sunday, De Lange requested to the city manager and infrastructure DCM to attend to it urgently.

While the municipality on Monday said it has attended to the issue, Empangeni motorists say the state of the road remains substandard, posing continued potential risk.
