Durban nanny arrested in Empangeni for child abduction

9-month-old baby abducted in Durban found in Empangeni

A woman (35) working as a nanny in Durban was arrested in Empangeni over the weekend for child stealing.

The police report indicates that when the mother of a 9-month-old child returned home on Saturday afternoon, she discovered the nanny and her son were not in the house.

She contacted the nanny, asking about her whereabouts, as she had not consented to the child being taken anywhere.

Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza, said the nanny informed the mother of the child that she was somewhere in Empangeni, but could not provide a reasonable explanation as to why she had left and taken the child with her.

“Their conversation suggested that the mother needed to go alone to Empangeni to fetch her child. The matter was reported at the Durban Central Police Station, and all relevant police units were immediately on board in trying to assist with the investigation into this matter.

“On Sunday morning, a police operation was conducted in Empangeni, where the woman was arrested. The child was found unharmed and was taken for a precautionary medical examination.

“Further investigations revealed that the suspect had informed her boyfriend that the child was theirs, and that the boyfriend had been giving her R2 500 a month to take care of the child’s needs,” said Magwaza.

He said the suspect is expected to appear before the Durban Magistrate’s Court soon.
