According to the court report, the teen was walking home from school when the incident occurred.
Mbambo threatened her with a knife and raped her before fleeing the scene. The victim went home and reported the incident to her family.
A case of rape was registered at Nkandla SAPS, and the girl was taken to hospital for a medical examination, where DNA evidence was taken.
The DNA evidence eventually linked Mbambo, who was in custody for another matter, to the rape.

In a victim impact statement, the girl said that the ordeal has severely traumatised her, and she is now always angry and untrusting of men.
She said she used to be a happy and jovial person, but is now withdrawn and embarrassed by what happened to her.
In addition to the life sentence, Mbambo was declared unfit to possess a firearm, and the court ordered that his name be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.
