Above-normal rainfall predicted for KZN over summer season

SA Weather Service (SAWS) presents its seasonal forecast for summer, predicts above-normal rainfall

Higher than normal rainfall has been predicted for some provinces, including KZN, over late spring and summer.

This was revealed by the SA Weather Service (SAWS), which presented its seasonal forecast for summer on Tuesday.

While a hotter than normal season is being predicted, above-normal rainfall is also on the cards, which could be a welcome boost to water reservoirs and dams in some areas.

This as dam levels in the region have recorded positive figures, with Goedertrouw sitting at 95% this week, and Pongolapoort dam at 93%.

It comes as parts of the province, including the Zululand region, have been experiencing heavy rainfall over the past few days.

The SAWS has, however, called for precautionary measures to be put in place to guard against possible natural disasters.

“These conditions could pose public health risks and the occurrence of natural disasters, especially flooding,” the weather service stated.

“The EL Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is in a neutral state, with rapid cooling experienced in the last month, which could result in a weak La Niña event within the next month if current predictions hold true.

“For South Africa, this translates into generally favourable rainfall conditions for the summer rainfall areas in the north-eastern parts of the country, and is expected to increase the likelihood of flooding during summer.”

Farmers are encouraged to implement soil and water conservation measures, proper harvesting and storage techniques, and proper drainage systems to mitigate these impacts.

“Measures such as establishing proper drainage systems must be taken to safeguard against floods.

“Without proactive measures in anticipation of the impending above-average rainfall patterns, which could exacerbate existing drought conditions in these areas,” SAWS said.
