SA mourns the death of Ambassador Nathi Mthethwa
Former minister and SA ambassador to France Nathi Mthethwa was found dead at a hotel in Paris
Zululander and South Africa’s ambassador to France, Nathi Mthethwa, has died after reportedly falling from the 22nd floor of a hotel in Paris.
According to reports, Mthethwa had been reported missing by his wife the previous night, and his body was found on Tuesday at the Hyatt Hotel.
His untimely passing was confirmed by Department of International Relations & Cooperation (DIRCO) on Tuesday.
The department said the circumstances of his death are being investigated by the French authorities.
“The government of South Africa extends its deepest and most sincere condolences to the family of Ambassador Mthethwa, and to his friends and colleagues during this period of immense grief,” said DIRCO Minister Ronald Lamola.
“I have no doubt that his passing is not only a national loss but is also felt within the international diplomatic community.
“We honour his legacy of unwavering patriotism and service to our nation.”
Mthethwa, who is from the KwaMthethwa Reserve under the uMfolozi Municipality, is survived by his wife and children.
He was appointed as ambassador in December 2023, and tasked with strengthening the vital partnership and bilateral ties between South Africa and France.
He served as minister of arts and culture from 2014 to 2019. From 2019 to 2023 he served as minister of sport, arts and culture. He is also a former police minister, serving from 2009 to 2014.
