Spate of air con thefts in Richards Bay raises alarm

Criminals target outside component of air-conditioning units, residents and businesses urged to take necessary precaution

Thefts of air-conditioning unit components has plagued several public facilities in Ward 26, raising the alarm on the latest crime trend.

This after the Aquadene and Brackenham CPFs reported several targeted buildings, ranging from schools, to churches, and a library.

Criminals target the outside component of the air-conditioning unit, which contains copper elements, from coils to copper piping.

Aquadene CPF chairperson Quade Goodman said this has been an ongoing challenge, with the community’s library targeted twice this year, leaving several air conditioners stripped.

“It is truly a tragedy when a facility that serves the purpose of helping our youth and community has become a target for criminals,” said Goodman.

“The library has been targeted by criminals, not only for the air-conditioning units but also in previous incidents where computers and other equipment was stolen.

“More disturbing is that one of the suburb’s churches also had some of its components stolen from the air-conditioning unit recently.

“The theft of copper elements remains a concern, and we appeal to the community to take extra precaution to safeguard their equipment.

“There are cages and bolts that can be erected around the units, as well as erecting them in areas that are not easily accessible, for added safety.

“We encourage residents to report all crimes to the police so they are aware of the criminal trends that are occurring in the suburbs, and measures can be taken to beef up crime fighting efforts,” he said.

Meanwhile, Brackenham residents face the same issue, with several public facilities also targeted.

Brackenham CPF chairperson Loven Singh said anywhere that has air-conditioning units must be alert to this crime trend, and measures must be taken to enforce all security where possible.

“There have been several places targeted. The CPF continues to deter criminal activity in the community and remains committed to patrol efforts in curbing crime,” said Singh.
